Kandy Perahera - Wall hanger

Another wall hanger I did a long time ago!! Really! I just forgot to post bout it in here!! Hehe… As a matter of fact, this is the very first wall hanger I did, few years ago!

The design portraits the Traditional Kandy Perahera, Ok now let me explain about it briefly.
It’s the grandest Buddhist procession in Sri Lanka, which displays the sacred Tooth relic of Buddha. IT’s a grand and elegant festival which is held in August in Kandy. The festival consists of various cultural dancers, drummers, fire throwers and very elegantly decorated elephants. It’s also called “Esala perahera(procession), Dalada Perahera”.  The Dalada perahera is believed to have begun when the Sacred tooth relic of Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka from India during the 4th century BC.  According to tradition the Tooth Relic was taken in procession to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamala and & Prince Dhantha. This is a very old traditional procession which started centuries ago and still continues today.  The Tooth Relic is usually kept inside the most venerated Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka, The Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy. Over the centuries, various kings protected the sacred Tooth relic with utmost dignity and having the possession of it considered to be the symbol of the right to rule the country!

Ok, enough with the history lesson now! Let’s get back to the perahera (procession). I used various shapes to do my design and glitter to enhance the characters.

So the perahera actually consists of many types of dancers and unique characters, I have only shown few important ones in my design. At the forefront of the procession, are the Whip Crackers. They signify the approach of the procession. Then comes the Flag Bearers carrying the flags of different provinces and temples in single file. Next is the drummers playing an array of traditional drums and blowing traditional flutes. With the hoard of drummers the traditional kandyan dancers appears with elegant costumes.
There’s also a number elephants nicely decorated with beautiful garments also appear in the procession with Nilames.

Well, however my design of perahera actually doesn’t include the most important and the center of attraction of the procession, the Maligawa Tusker!!! Now I wonder why!

Anyway, the Maligawa Tusker is not just another elephant; it is treated with the utmost respect here in Sri Lanka. The Tusker of temple is robed very elegantly and steps in with the supreme grace and great pride carrying a golden casket called “Ransivige” which contains the Sacred Tooth Relic. Tusker walks on a white cloth called ‘Pavada’ and a canopy is held high over the tusker. All the spectators stand while the Maligawa tusker carrying the Sacred Tooth Relic passes them.  Then comes, the custodian of the Temple of the Tooth called, ‘diyawadana nilame’, dressed in traditional regalia of the high officials of the kings who reigned at the medieval kingdom of Kandy.

MOM! Filled with Color!!

MOM!! I made this for My MOM!! She had to spend her 60th birthday in the hospital unfortunately few months ago.. So I wanted to give something special for her belated birthday!! He he I always forget to do my work before the actual birthday hehe ! Because her birthday was in September and I finished this recently!! The hard part was doing this without seen by my mother ! coz it was supposed to be a surprise! Luckily she went away for a funeral for 2 days and I had all the freedom!!

So Quilling typography!! I love it!! This time instead of swirls and spirals of paper stripes I used tight coils in lots of colors!! Since mom is an amazing person I believe you need to use lots of colors to represent her!! I used soft colors for this design. Tight rolls and stripes are used to fill the letters!  Making lots of tight rolls aint that easy !! took me few days to roll them.. Did them while watching my favorite TV serials !! hehe…  I also used 3 fringed flowers , too.  The size of this wall hanger is 22 by 42 cm.

Oh and I made the White Frame myself! I had made a frame before using a different technique , which I used for THIS wall hanger..It was a bit hard and messy.  But this time , I used a much better technique which I learned from Inna ..  who is a wonderful quiller .. I get lots of my inspirations there …you can check it out HERE. It’s neat and clean!!

Isn't it amazing what these little guys could do....??

here’s a photo of how I wrapped it! hehe quick and easy !

Happy Diwali Everyone!! Sorry I don’t have any cards for Diwali!

Quilled Wall hanger - Quilled Names

Well folks, how’s everything with you?? Let me tell you what I’ve been doing! I did a huge quilling thing last month actually... it’s not that huge really...but for me it was!! Cos it involved rolling and rolling and rolling!!! He he

So this is my new project! I did a wall hanger using quilling!! I’ve been doing quilling for cards some time... but this is the first time I used it for a wall hanger! This is actually a gift for a newly weds! I made it especially for my sweet cousin Jan actually! “JAN” is the bride’s name and “YAJ” is the groom’s name, in short! He he I wanted to give something that reflects themselves!! And I’m happy cos they are happy with it too!!!

I’m really tired of all the quilled flowers and leaves nowadays so I thought of doing something with simple rolling and swirls!! But believe me… it wasn’t so simple as much as I thought it would be!
The hardest part was to pick the colors…at first it was a rainbow colors...But it looked too complicated so I reduced it to 3 colors finally! Then came the problem of which colors…I had to pick red...cos it shows love...then yellow…cos it’s one of the nicest colors I have in my color palette now..And then I chose green...the color of nature…and voila! There are my 3 colors!! He he

So at first I rolled and unrolled lots of paper coils to make simple swirls, cos I wanted to do a complex design with simple things!! Did that make sense??? He he.. My intention was to create a design that embosses the name of the couple, I wanted to fill the whole things… but again not too complex!! That’s why I used simple form of quilling! Doing the wording a little bit hard...I filled each parts of color one by one...spontaneously putting rolls here and there... I did couple of flowers and heart just to add some variety!
The idea was to hide the letters in the quilling jungle! The letters have to blend in with the colors and the design! And it took some time and lots of patience to finish!! But I’m totally happy with the outcome!

Oh and forgot to mention one thing... I made the frame all by myself!! Yup!! I used a transparent sheet instead of glass...and black thick board for the frame.. I’m hoping to do a tutorial on framing later…
